Torrance Divergence Criteria

INTRODUCTION

CORE DEFINITION
The Torrance tests, developed by the psychologist E. P. Torrance, operationalise divergent thinking as four countable dimensions. Fluency counts the number of relevant ideas produced. Flexibility counts how many distinct categories those ideas span. Originality scores how rare each idea is relative to the population of responses. Elaboration scores the amount of detail added to a basic idea. The core proposition is that creativity is not a single fuzzy quality but a set of observable behaviours that can be scored, compared and trained. The key qualification is that the scores measure divergent production, one component of creativity rather than the whole of it, since a rare idea may still be worthless.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Score All Four: count ideas, categories, rarity and detail instead of judging creativity as one thing. - Read The Profile: use the four numbers to see which dimension a person or team is weak in. - Train The Weak Axis: set exercises that target the lowest dimension rather than repeating strengths.
Anchor fast decisions
Creativity resists measurement as long as it is treated as a single glow, because judges then score on whatever dimension they happen to value. Splitting it into four countable behaviours removes that ambiguity: each dimension produces a number, and numbers can be compared across people and sessions. That also makes training targeted, because a profile showing high fluency and low flexibility tells you exactly which exercise to run, instead of vaguely exhorting people to be more creative.
