Small Multiples

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Popularised by Edward Tufte, small multiples repeat the same chart structure many times with different data, varying only the values while keeping axes, scales, and styling constant. Because the encoding is identical, the eye compares the panels directly and differences stand out. The qualification is that the comparison depends on identical scales, so varying the axes between panels destroys the very property that makes the technique useful.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use Dimension Selection: choose the variable to compare, such as region, category, or period. - Use Scale Consistency: keep axes and styling identical across every panel so differences are real.
Anchor fast decisions
Colour and labels have to be decoded, but position and shape can be compared at a glance. Repeating an identical structure turns many panels into a single comparative display, so variation across categories becomes visible without any legend or memory of another chart.
