CORE DEFINITION
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's systems model holds that a creative product emerges from three interacting elements: the individual who produces variation, the domain of symbolic rules and knowledge, and the field of gatekeepers who select what enters the domain. A novelty counts as creative only when the field accepts it, so recognition is part of the mechanism rather than an afterthought. The qualification is that the model describes how creativity is judged and preserved, not how ideas are generated.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use Ecosystem Diagnosis: check whether an idea lacks producer skill, domain knowledge, or field acceptance. - Use Gatekeeper Mapping: identify who decides what enters your domain before you design the pitch.
Anchor fast decisions
The domain stores prior work in coded form, the individual recombines it, and the field filters the results. Because the field's judgement determines what is retained, variation that the gatekeepers reject disappears regardless of its quality, and variation that survives changes the domain for the next cycle.
