Odd and Even (Qi-Zheng)

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A core pairing in Chinese military thought, most fully stated in the Art of War, where zheng denotes orthodox, direct deployment and qi denotes unorthodox, indirect manoeuvre. The two generate each other without end, so what is unorthodox in one engagement becomes orthodox in the next. The qualification is that the distinction is relational rather than fixed, since no tactic is inherently orthodox and the pairing fails if either element is missing.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use Two-Track Resourcing: fund the core business and a separate experimental effort at the same time. - Use Surprise Timing: commit visible resources to the obvious front while preparing the decisive move elsewhere.
Anchor fast decisions
A defender can prepare against one line of attack but not against an unlimited set of them. Orthodox action fixes attention and consumes the opponent's preparation, which leaves the unconventional move unguarded; once that move succeeds, the roles reverse and the new method becomes the expected one.
