Think Aloud Method
Updated 2026-08-15
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
The think-aloud method requires participants to verbalise everything passing through their mind while completing a task. In usability testing it exposes where users search, hesitate, and misinterpret, information that silent observation misses. Cognitive psychology uses the same spoken-report method to study how people solve problems. The qualification is that concurrent verbalisation is not introspection about causes, and it imposes a cognitive load that can alter the very performance being studied.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use Usability Diagnosis: watch where users hesitate and hear why before fixing the interface. - Use Reasoning Capture: record the path someone takes through a problem to locate broken assumptions.
Anchor fast decisions
Much of skilled performance runs automatically and leaves no trace. Requiring speech forces these processes into working memory and out through language, so the researcher gains access to goals, expectations, and confusion at the moment they occur rather than reconstructing them from a final result.
