Outgroup Homogeneity
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
We tend to perceive members of our own group (ingroup) as diverse and individualistic, while perceiving members of other groups (outgroup) as "all the same" (e.g., "people in sales are all slick," "programmers are all dull").
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
De-labeling. When a team starts to generalize another department with "those people," intervene immediately. Introduce specific personal stories to break the monolithic illusion of homogeneity.
Anchor fast decisions
The outgroup homogeneity bias refers to the tendency to think "they (the outgroup) are all the same," while ingroup members are seen as having distinct personalities. The mechanism is that limited contact leads to a lack of information about individual differences.
