Chart Junk

INTRODUCTION

CORE DEFINITION
Chartjunk is every visual element in a chart that contributes nothing to understanding the data, from spare color and shadow to complicated texture, and it does worse than nothing by competing for the attention the data itself needs. The remedy, as Tufte argues, is to maximize the data-ink ratio, so that every drop of ink carries information instead of decoration.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Audit each element: ask what this border or gradient is doing for the data - Delete the decoration: remove the 3D effects, shadows, and patterns that serve nothing - Raise the data-ink: spend the ink on the data and let the rest of it go
Anchor fast decisions
Attention is finite and is distributed across whatever is salient on the page, so decoration and data draw from the very same budget. Ornament raises the visual noise without adding any signal, and in the case of 3D effects it even distorts the proportions being read, so the chart becomes harder and less accurate at the very same time.
