Dogfooding
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Employees of a company use the products they develop themselves, discovering problems and opportunities for improvement in real-world usage.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Become a user of your own product. Designers and users have different perspectives; using the product personally can uncover many issues that would not be thought of while sitting in the office.
Anchor fast decisions
The information asymmetry between producers and users is high: designers are familiar with the internal implementation and tend to overlook friction and abnormal paths in real scenarios. When employees become real users, feedback comes from personal experience rather than second-hand reports, problems are discovered earlier and described more accurately, forming a closed loop of "use-feedback-improvement", while also forcing the team to take responsibility for quality.
