Diegesis
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Refers to the fictional world constructed within a story. A diegetic sound is one that characters in the story can hear (e.g., a radio broadcast), while a non-diegetic sound is one that only the audience can hear (e.g., background music).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Distinguish layers of experience. In product design, distinguish which elements are part of the user's experience (diegetic, such as in-game UI) and which are external interactions or aids. Immersion is key to Diegesis.
Anchor fast decisions
Diegesis is the internally consistent fictional universe of a story, whose rules, history, and sounds 'belong' to that world. A narrative sound is 'diegetic' if characters can perceive it, otherwise it is 'non-diegetic'. Immersion relies on keeping the experience as much as possible within the diegesis.
