Parametric Ideation
Updated 2026-08-11
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
The method identifies the key parameters of a design, such as size, material, color, speed, or user count, and then systematically varies each one, taking it to an extreme, inverting it, or combining changes, to generate candidate solutions. Its purpose is to discipline divergence: rather than waiting for inspiration, it walks the parameter space, which is enumerable, and forces the search to cover the dimensions a first idea has left unexamined.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- List the parameters: name the variables the design actually has. - Push each one: take a parameter to an extreme or invert it. - Screen the results: keep only the variants that survive feasibility.
Anchor fast decisions
Ideas cluster in the region of the parameter space that the current solution occupies, so unforced ideation samples that region repeatedly. Systematically varying each parameter forces sampling outside the cluster, and the combinations multiply as the parameters do, which is why the method produces candidates that intuition does not supply.
