Zone of Possible Agreement
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The overlapping area between the bottom lines of the negotiating parties. If there is a ZOPA, negotiation can succeed; if not, negotiation is doomed to fail.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Negotiation map. Before entering negotiation, you must deduce the other party's bottom line (BATNA). Your task is not to 'win' but to detect whether a ZOPA exists. If you dwell outside the ZOPA, it is a pure waste of time.
Anchor fast decisions
The success or failure of negotiation depends on whether the bottom lines of both parties overlap: only when there is overlap (positive ZOPA) can an agreement be reached; if there is no overlap, any technique is ineffective; the essence is structural, not verbal.
