INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

A judgment shortcut in which the amount of effort invested is used as a proxy for quality when quality itself is hard to assess. Effort is visible and easily observed, while real quality requires evaluation, so the mind substitutes the easier signal. The key qualification is that the heuristic operates in both directions of judgment: people overvalue others' laborious work and their own. The remedy is to replace the effort proxy with outcome measures, objective criteria, or user feedback.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Proxy detection: notice when effort is standing in for evidence about quality. - Outcome substitution: replace the effort question with results, criteria, or user feedback. - Personal self-check: test your own work against outcomes rather than hours invested.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Quality is often invisible without deliberate evaluation, whereas effort leaves observable traces such as time, complexity, and struggle. When a fast judgment is needed, the mind reaches for the available cue rather than the valid one. Because the substitution happens automatically, the resulting valuation feels like a direct perception of quality rather than an inference from an irrelevant signal, which is why the error survives reflection.
