Chernoff Faces
Updated 2026-08-10
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Chernoff in 1973, this visualization maps each dimension of a multivariate record onto a facial parameter such as eye size, mouth curvature, or brow height, and draws one face per record. Because humans are evolved to read minute differences in faces, a glance across the crowd reveals the anomalous record without any statistic being computed first.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Map the variables: assign each data dimension to a facial feature. - Scan for oddity: read the crowd of faces and note which expression stands out. - Verify with numbers: treat the face as a lead rather than a measurement.
Anchor fast decisions
The human visual system is tuned to detect minute deviations in facial configuration, a sensitivity produced by evolution. Routing arbitrary data through that channel turns differences that would be invisible in a table into immediately salient signals, so outliers are detected before any analysis begins.
