INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

A teaching from the Analects in which Confucius says that placing the upright above the crooked causes the crooked to become upright. Its core proposition is that the selection and promotion decision is itself the strongest cultural signal, so the fastest way to change an organization's climate is not a slogan but promoting someone who embodies the values, which teaches the standard more effectively than any statement. The qualifier is that the standard must be explicit and consistently applied.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Standard definition: state explicitly what counts as upright in this particular organization right now. - Signal promotion: promote a person who clearly and visibly meets that standard in daily work. - Crooked displacement: remove or demote those who visibly violate it, so the signal is unmistakable.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

People read an organization's real standards from who rises and who falls, not from what it announces, so each promotion answers the question of what actually gets rewarded. When the promoted person visibly embodies the stated value, the reward system and the stated standard agree, and behavior follows the reward system far more reliably than it follows the statement.
