INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

An image from the third line of the Abundance hexagram in the I Ching, in which the canopy is so thick that broad daylight looks like scattered stars, and the right arm is broken. Its core proposition is that abundant resources lead an organization to build thick screens of hierarchy, arrogance, and habit, which block the outside light from decision makers so that only a faint internal glow remains, and the loss of the right arm signals damage to a key capability. The qualifier is that the obscuring is self-created rather than imposed from outside.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Obscuring signal: notice information filtering and contempt for outside views as warning signs. - Screen removal: actively pull in outside perspectives to break the thick canopy. - Capability guard: protect the key skill whose loss would be the broken right arm.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Abundance removes the scarcity that forced attention outward, so hierarchy and past success thicken into a screen between decision makers and the world. What reaches the top is filtered toward what is comfortable, so daylight reads as faint stars and the internal glow is mistaken for the whole picture, which is exactly when the key capability is at risk.
