Intermediate Package

CORE DEFINITION
A practice proposed by Tiago Forte, from the PARA and building-a-second-brain methods, in which a large project is not expected to be completed in one push but is broken into a series of reusable intermediate artifacts such as notes, sketches, outlines, and modules. Its core proposition is that when every working session deposits something portable, the knowledge base keeps growing and even a terminated project leaves assets behind, which avoids all-or-nothing waste. The qualifier is that the packages must stay retrievable and be refreshed rather than left to go stale.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Package definition: split the large project into a series of discrete artifacts you can deliver. - Reuse design: keep each artifact independent, retrievable, and useful in other work. - Library deposit: file every finished artifact into your personal knowledge base as you go.
Anchor fast decisions
Work aimed only at a finished deliverable has no value until the end, so an abandoned project wastes everything spent on it. Treating each session as producing a portable artifact changes the accounting, since every unit of effort deposits something retrievable, and the accumulated packages can be recombined later instead of being written from scratch.
