Three Generates All Things

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A line from the Dao De Jing stating that the Dao generates the one, the one generates the two, the two generate the three, and the three generate all things. Its core proposition is that three is the smallest structure capable of producing variety: one is unity, two is opposition, and three is the synthesis in which the opposed elements interact and generate something new. The qualifier is that the third element must emerge from the interaction of the pair rather than be added mechanically.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Find the one: define the shared ground or common goal that unifies the system. - Split into two: name the key opposition or polarity you are working with. - Generate the three: introduce the mechanism through which the pair interacts and produces something new.
Anchor fast decisions
A single element cannot produce variety, and two opposed elements can only oscillate between the poles. Adding a third that mediates the pair creates a relationship, and relationships are what generate new states: the third supplies the interaction that turns static opposition into a process, which is why complexity jumps at three rather than at two.
