Gowin's V-Diagram
Updated 2026-08-09
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
The Vee Diagram, developed by Gowin, has two sides joined at a point. The left side, the conceptual or theoretical side, holds the principles, theories and concepts. The right side, the methodological or practical side, holds the data, transformations and knowledge claims. The bottom tip holds the focused question or event that drives the inquiry. As a bridge between theory and practice the diagram shows learners how scientific knowledge is built: theory guides the experiment and the experiment tests the theory.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- State the focus at the tip: write the driving question before anything else. - Load theory on the left: list the principles that will guide the inquiry. - Load method on the right: record the data and the transformations of it.
Anchor fast decisions
Gowin's V-diagram visualizes the construction of knowledge: the conceptual side on the left with principles, theories and concepts and the method side on the right with data, transformations and knowledge claims, meeting at the focused question at the tip. Theory guides the experiment and the experiment tests the theory, which shows scientific knowledge as a two-way construction.
