CORE DEFINITION

S.O.A.R. is a cognitive strategy framework for deep learning. Selection filters important content from noise, lowering extraneous load. Organisation structures what remains into outlines or concept maps. Association links new material to existing knowledge, creating retrieval anchors. Regulation monitors whether understanding is genuine and sends the learner back when it is not. Drawn from cognitive load and elaboration research, the four operations together describe the path from surface exposure to durable, transferable understanding.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Use selection filter: cut a chapter down to its core concepts before rereading it. - Use structure build: arrange selected ideas into an outline or concept map. - Use self-check loop: ask whether you could explain it aloud, then revisit the gaps.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Effective learning depends on four operations working in sequence. Selection reduces irrelevant information and lowers extraneous cognitive load; organisation builds structure; association ties new material to existing schemas; and regulation monitors comprehension. Together they form a deep-processing loop in which the learner checks understanding and loops back whenever it is missing.
