CORE DEFINITION
S+7 is a constrained-writing technique from the Oulipo tradition. Every noun in a source text is replaced by the noun found seven entries later in a chosen dictionary, leaving the rest of the sentence intact. The mechanical rule removes the hesitation of choosing words and forces the writer to read familiar language as if it were new, generating unexpected imagery, humour, or juxtaposition. The resulting text is usually not publishable as is; its value lies in the associations it provokes during brainstorming or in breaking an image habit.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use constraint seed: swap every noun seven places forward in a dictionary. - Use image breaker: read the result aloud to catch unexpected fresh imagery. - Use brainstorm harvest: pull one usable phrase out of the result before discarding it.
Anchor fast decisions
The technique rests on constraint-driven creativity. When normal semantic routes are blocked because nouns have been swapped, the mind is forced into unconventional associations and escapes its habitual groove. The mechanical rule also removes the paralysing question of which word to choose, redirecting attention to the new relations the substitution creates.
