Rhodes' 6 Ps of Creativity
Updated 2026-08-10
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Mel Rhodes proposed analysing creativity through interacting dimensions rather than a single trait. The original four Ps were Person, the traits of the creator; Process, the methods used; Product, the resulting output; and Press or Place, the environmental conditions. Later extensions added Persuasion, how ideas are communicated and adopted, and Potential, the latent capacity available. Because each dimension can be diagnosed and altered, creativity becomes a system to be designed rather than a gift that either exists or does not.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use bottleneck diagnosis: identify which of the six dimensions is blocking creativity right now. - Use environment intervention: adjust press and psychological safety before blaming the people. - Use process tooling: install divergent methods when the process dimension is empty.
Anchor fast decisions
Creativity is not a single-point phenomenon of a gifted mind. Rhodes treats it as interaction among person, process, product, press, persuasion, and potential. Because each dimension can be observed and altered, teams can intervene where the real constraint sits, instead of concluding that the people simply lack talent.
