REAP

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
REAP is a four-step active reading strategy. Read covers the initial pass through the text; Encode requires restating the key points in your own words without looking; Annotate adds written comments, questions, and links to prior knowledge; and Ponder pushes toward deeper meaning by asking how the ideas connect and what they imply. The method addresses the low retention produced by passive reading by forcing retrieval, elaboration, and reflection during study rather than after it.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use close-reading pass: read a section, then restate its central argument without looking. - Use annotation habit: record questions and links in the margin as you read. - Use pondering prompt: ask what the passage changes in your existing view.
Anchor fast decisions
Passive reading leaves little behind. REAP converts reading into active construction: read to acquire, encode by restating in your own words, annotate to capture understanding and doubts, and ponder to extract meaning and connections. The four steps move information from merely passing through the mind to being genuinely internalised.
