Fogg Behavior Model
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A behavior design model developed by Dr. BJ Fogg of Stanford University: Core formula: B = MAT (Behavior = Motivation × Ability × Trigger) Three elements: - M (Motivation): Motivation - the degree to which one wants to do the thing - A (Ability): Ability - the ease of doing the thing - T (Trigger/Prompt): Trigger/Prompt - the signal or reminder that prompts the behavior Condition for behavior to occur: Behavior occurs only when motivation, ability, and trigger are simultaneously present and strong enough.

Simplify behavior, design habits. The FBM model helps understand why certain behaviors are difficult to cultivate—usually
Anchor fast decisions
A behavior design model developed by BJ Fogg, with the formula B = MAT. Core insight: **Behavior occurs = Motivation × Ability × Trigger are all present and strong enough**. The three are in an "and" relationship—if any one approaches zero, the behavior does not occur. Therefore, to change behavior, you don't have to drastically increase motivation; improving ability (simplifying) or adding triggers is often a more effortless lever.
