CORE DEFINITION
DPSIR is a causal analysis framework developed by the European Environment Agency. Its five elements are Drivers, the socioeconomic factors such as population and economic growth that cause environmental change; Pressures, the direct stress placed on the environment such as emissions and resource consumption; State, the current condition of the environment such as air quality and species diversity; Impacts, the effects of environmental change on people and ecosystems; and Responses, the measures society takes in response such as policy and technology. The mechanism is to trace causes forward and policies backward, which locates intervention points in a complex environmental system.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Trace the whole chain forward: follow the drivers through to the impacts before acting. - Locate the true intervention point: find where in the chain a response bites hardest. - Close the loop: treat each response as feedback that changes the drivers, not an endpoint.
Anchor fast decisions
A causal analysis framework developed by the European Environment Agency that chains human activity to environment to impact to response as Drivers, Pressures, State, Impacts and Responses. It traces causes forward and policies backward, which locates the intervention points in a complex environmental system.
