4V

INTRODUCTION

CORE DEFINITION
The 4V model groups four levers for building brand advantage: variation, the differentiation from competitors; versatility, the range of functions the offer covers; value, the added benefits such as service, status or experience; and vibration, the emotional resonance created through story and shared values. It is applied where price competition has become unsustainable and the firm needs to occupy a position in the customer's mind rather than in a comparison table.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Find the difference: identify clearly what you offer that competitors cannot easily copy or imitate. - Add the layer: attach service, status or experience to the core product. - Build the resonance: connect the brand to values the customer already holds.
Anchor fast decisions
Price competition transfers all the surplus to the buyer and leaves no margin for improvement, so firms that compete only on price cannot invest in differentiation. The 4V levers shift the comparison away from price toward attributes that are harder to evaluate and copy. Emotional resonance in particular makes the choice feel like an expression of identity rather than a calculation.
