NASA 4D

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Developed from work with NASA teams, the 4D model describes four orientations that members bring to a team: directing, focused on task and logic; visioning, focused on purpose and innovation; relating, focused on relationships and emotion; and cultivating, focused on values and growth. Teams that over-weight the task-oriented orientations lose cohesion, and the model advises leaders to assess the distribution and supply the missing dimensions rather than to standardize everyone.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Map the mix: identify which orientation dominates the team and which is missing. - Fill the gap: add the missing dimension through deliberate practices rather than hiring. - Flex the style: switch leadership orientation to match what the current situation needs.
Anchor fast decisions
Task-oriented orientations produce plans and decisions but generate no attachment between members, so disagreement turns into conflict and effort decays. Relationship-oriented orientations build the trust that lets the task work proceed under stress. Because teams tend to select for the orientation their work rewards, the missing dimension has to be supplied deliberately.
