Observability
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Different from monitoring (looking at dashboards). Observability is the ability to infer the internal state of a system from its outputs (logs, metrics). If the system is a black box, it is not observable.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Transparency of the system. A good organization or person should be 'observable'. This means you don't have to watch them work; you can accurately infer their work status and potential problems just by looking at their outputs. Establishing good output mechanisms (daily reports, documents) is key to improving observability.
Anchor fast decisions
In control theory, observability refers to whether the internal state can be uniquely inferred from external outputs. If not observable, internal faults are invisible (black box). Modern extension: transparency of systems or organizations, inferring state from outputs (metrics/logs) rather than watching the process.
