CORE DEFINITION

The perception of a stimulus is significantly influenced by stimuli presented before or simultaneously. If you put your hand in cold water first and then in warm water, the warm water feels hot; if you look at expensive houses first and then moderate ones, the moderate ones seem cheap.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Manipulation of reference frames. Value is relative. In negotiation quotes or work reports, the first reference point (anchor) you give determines how the other party evaluates your subsequent proposals. Never present a proposal in isolation; place it in a favorable comparison sequence.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Perception is not absolute but relative; stimuli presented before or simultaneously form a reference frame, causing the same object to be evaluated differently depending on the sequence; evaluation is determined by 'compared with what'.
