Limits to Growth
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
On a finite planet, exponential economic and population growth cannot continue indefinitely. Systems inevitably face physical limits (resource depletion, pollution exceeding capacity), causing growth curves to eventually collapse or level off in an S-shape.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Boundary awareness. Any business model or career development that relies on unlimited resource input (e.g., burning cash, overworking) will eventually hit a wall. Must switch from 'growth mode' to 'equilibrium mode' before hitting the wall.
Anchor fast decisions
In a finite system, exponential growth is necessarily constrained by physical boundaries (resources, environmental capacity). Beyond a critical point, it either collapses nonlinearly or transitions to S-shaped saturation; growth and constraints form a balancing loop.
