Toffler's Wave Theory
Updated 2026-08-09
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Alvin Toffler divided civilization into three waves: the agricultural revolution, organized around land; the industrial revolution, organized around machines and capital; and the information revolution, organized around knowledge. Each wave reshaped family, economy, and political structure, and the collisions between them explain much of contemporary conflict. When parents press marriage and the child asserts individualism, two waves are meeting, and the friction is structural rather than personal.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Wave typing: identify which wave each side of a conflict actually lives inside. - Transition mapping: locate the organization on the curve between the waves. - Coexistence plan: manage old and new together rather than forcing one to win outright.
Anchor fast decisions
Each wave is built on a new productive technology, and that technology rewrites how work, family, and power are organized. The new wave does not erase the old on contact; the two coexist, and the mismatch between their values generates the friction that people experience as generational conflict.
