Biofilm

CORE DEFINITION
A biological membrane (biomembrane) is a collective term for all membrane structures within an organism. It is a closed, separating membrane that acts as a selectively permeable barrier in organisms. The cell membrane is one type of biological membrane, typically composed of a phospholipid bilayer with integral or peripheral membrane proteins that transport chemicals and ions. The abundant lipids in the membrane provide a fluid environment for proteins to rotate and diffuse laterally. The cell membrane should not be confused with tissues formed by layered cells that have a separating function, such as mucous membranes and basement membranes. Biological membranes can be classified into: cell membrane, organelle membrane, nuclear membrane, and synaptic vesicle membrane.

Anchor fast decisions
A biofilm is a community structure formed by microorganisms attaching to surfaces and secreting extracellular polysaccharides, making them more resistant to drugs and environmental stress than planktonic cells. It alters the difficulty of infection and treatment.
