Arrow of Time
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In macroscopic physical processes, time has a unidirectional nature (from past to future), determined by the direction of entropy increase. Although microscopic physical laws are time-reversible, macroscopic statistical laws break this symmetry.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The physical root of irreversibility. Spilled water cannot be gathered up; a broken mirror cannot be made whole. When making decisions, distinguish between "reversible operations" (microscopic) and "irreversible operations" (macroscopic entropy increase). For decisions involving the arrow of time (such as broken trust or ecological damage), one must be extremely cautious.
Anchor fast decisions
Thermodynamic "arrow of time": entropy increase makes time unidirectional and processes irreversible; also used metaphorically for the irreversibility of history and causality.
