Percolation Theory
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The study of the critical value of connectivity in a random medium at which a spanning cluster (infinite cluster) suddenly appears, transitioning from local connectivity to global connectivity. This is the phase transition point from 'local connectivity' to 'global connectivity'.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The critical point for network connectivity. When spreading information or building connections, initially adding connections seems ineffective (all are isolated islands), but once the connection density exceeds the percolation threshold, the entire network suddenly becomes connected, and information can flow unimpeded throughout the network.
Anchor fast decisions
In a random network, when the occupation probability exceeds a threshold, a spanning connected cluster (phase transition) emerges.
