Lyapunov Exponent
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A measure of the sensitivity of a system to initial conditions. If the exponent is positive, two trajectories that were initially close will separate exponentially over time (butterfly effect), indicating chaos. If negative, trajectories converge, indicating stability.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
A yardstick for the validity period of predictions. When planning for the future, first estimate the Lyapunov exponent of the environment. If it is positive (e.g., stock market, startup phase), long-term prediction is futile; only short-term reactions are possible. If negative (e.g., large company processes, physics experiments), five-year plans are feasible.
Anchor fast decisions
Characterizes the exponential rate of separation of adjacent orbits in a dynamical system; if the largest exponent is positive, the system is sensitive to initial conditions (chaotic); if negative, it converges and is stable.
