CORE DEFINITION

Default (also known as default value) is a computer term referring to a pre-existing value in user-configurable settings, assigned to software applications, computer programs, or peripheral devices. Such settings are also called factory settings or initial presets, especially for electronic devices. Default values are designed to make devices as easy to use as possible out of the box, without requiring users to go through a lengthy configuration process before use; users only need to modify default settings according to personal preferences. Many devices offer the option to restore one or all settings to factory defaults. Because users tend to keep default settings, this tendency is called the 'default effect'.
