Paralinguistics, also known as paralanguage expression, is a component of meta-communication, a discipline that studies the influence of vocal characteristics or variations on semantics. The research scope includes the subtle meanings imparted by changes in tone, intonation, stress, prosody, etc., which can be expressed consciously or unconsciously. The discipline of paralinguistics was invented by George L. Trager in the 1950s while he was working at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State.

Paralanguage refers to non-lexical vocal features accompanying speech (pitch, volume, speech rate, rhythm, pauses, sighs, laughter, etc.), driven by the autonomic nervous system and emotional states, making them difficult to fake. Therefore, they often reveal emotions, attitudes, and confidence levels more truthfully than deliberately chosen words. When words and paralanguage are inconsistent, the latter tends to be more credible.
