CORE DEFINITION
“Communication about communication.” In addition to conveying content (“Are we going to eat?”), we also convey information about how to interpret that content (tone, facial expressions implying “I'm joking” or “I'm serious”). Scaffolding role: Decode subtext. Interpersonal conflicts often arise not from the content (content level) but from metacommunication (relationship level) issues (e.g., “I don't like your tone”). When resolving conflicts, step outside the content and discuss “how we are communicating.”
