Prosopagnosia
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Commonly known as face blindness. Patients have normal vision and can recognize objects, but are uniquely unable to recognize faces (even their own in a mirror). They must rely on hairstyle, clothing, or voice to identify people.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Modularity of feature recognition. The brain has a dedicated module (fusiform gyrus) responsible for processing faces. This shows that 'recognizing people' and 'recognizing objects' are two completely different algorithms. When designing social products, a face is not just an image; it is the highest-priority social signal.
Anchor fast decisions
Prosopagnosia: Brain damage leads to inability to recognize faces while still knowing they are faces, revealing a dedicated pathway for face recognition.
