Sinthome
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A concept from late Lacan. It refers to an individual's unique symptomatic pattern that cannot be analyzed or cured. It is no longer seen as a pathological symptom, but as a unique way in which the individual organizes their psychic world and maintains the stability of their personality (e.g., Joyce's writing).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The art of coexisting with flaws. Do not try to 'cure' your deepest quirks or obsessions; they may be the load-bearing walls of your personality. Learn to use and sublimate them, transforming them into your unique source of creativity (sinthome).
Anchor fast decisions
In his late work, Lacan used sinthome to refer to the unique symptom by which the subject sutures their psychic structure and prevents subjective collapse. It is neither a pure symptom nor a solution, but the subject's way of 'enjoying' their symptom—removing it would destabilize the personality. Therefore, the goal of treatment is not elimination, but the reconstruction of the subject's relationship with their symptom.
