Black Queen Hypothesis
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In microbial communities, some species actively discard essential genes (e.g., genes for synthesizing certain vitamins) because they can hitchhike on substances secreted by other species in the environment. This is an evolutionary strategy of "reducing burden to depend on others."
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Dependence as an advantage. We usually think independence is good, but in ecosystems, moderate dependence (becoming a deficient member) can save a lot of energy for core competition. As long as the ecosystem is stable, active degradation is evolution.
Anchor fast decisions
The Black Queen Hypothesis: some members lose self-sufficiency functions and rely on 'public goods providers' in the community, allowing cooperation and free-riding to coexist stably in the community.
