Active Imagination
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A technique for dialoguing with the subconscious. In a waking state, one actively invites images from the unconscious (such as dream figures) to appear and engages with them in equal dialogue, debate, or interaction, thereby integrating the personality.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
A meeting with the inner self. When you are torn, try to concretize the inner conflict as two little figures (e.g., "the greedy ghost" and "the moralist") and let them debate in your mind. This concretization allows you to step out of the emotional whirlpool and become the "Self" that presides over the situation.
Anchor fast decisions
Building a bridge between the conscious and the unconscious: actively evoking inner images and engaging with them in equal dialogue, allowing repressed content to be externalized and integrated, promoting the individuation of the personality. It turns vague conflicts into concrete "characters" that can be dialogued with.
