Ethnocentrism
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The tendency to view one's own ethnic or cultural group as the center of the world and to use it as the standard for judging and devaluing other groups. This is the cognitive root of prejudice and conflict.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Self-imprisonment of perspective. This is a cognitive flaw that comes standard with every human being. We instinctively regard our own habits as 'natural' and those of others as 'strange.' Overcoming it requires great self-awareness to acknowledge that 'I am just one of countless ways of living.'
Anchor fast decisions
Individuals use their own group as the reference center, viewing their own customs as 'natural or correct' and others' as 'strange or inferior.' This is an evolutionarily formed in-group preference and cognitive shortcut. It creates prejudice and hinders effective cross-cultural collaboration.
