Fatigue Limit
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
When a material is subjected to cyclic stress (repeated bending), even if the stress is below the yield strength, it will eventually fracture if the number of cycles is sufficient. However, certain materials (such as steel) have a 'fatigue limit': as long as the stress is below this value, the material will not fail regardless of the number of cycles.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The threshold of sustainable endurance. In work or interpersonal relationships, find your fatigue limit. Stress below this intensity (such as moderate exercise or healthy competition) can be endured indefinitely without harm; once this threshold is exceeded, even if a single instance is not fatal, the cumulative effect can lead to sudden 'metal fatigue' fracture.
Anchor fast decisions
The fatigue limit is a concept in materials mechanics: when the stress amplitude is below a certain threshold, the material can withstand an infinite number of cycles without fatigue failure. It defines the safe upper limit for long-term loading.
