CORE DEFINITION
An identity card on the cell surface, used to show the immune system whether it is "self" or "non-self". It is also a source of odor attractiveness (people tend to prefer the scent of individuals with different MHC).

In team formation, we rationally know that diversity is needed (greater MHC diversity benefits offspring immunity), but instinctively we reject outsiders (immune response). MHC molecules present antigen fragments on the cell surface for T-cell recognition, and are key to immune recognition of 'self/non-self' and transplant matching.
