Koan
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A question that cannot be answered by logical thinking (e.g., "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"). Its purpose is to drive logical thinking into a dead end, forcing the mind to leap beyond the framework of language and achieve intuitive enlightenment.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Logical shock therapy. When conventional thinking (analysis, reasoning) fails to solve a problem, give yourself a Koan (a paradox or unanswerable question) to reboot the creative area of the brain by crashing the logic.
Anchor fast decisions
Zen uses seemingly unsolvable topics (like 'Who is reciting the Buddha's name?' 'What is the great meaning of the Buddha's teachings?') to cut off logical speculation, forcing practitioners to abandon conceptual attachment and trigger intuitive enlightenment within the state of doubt.
