Long-Term Potentiation, LTP
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
"Neurons that fire together wire together." (Hebbian Rule). If two neurons are repeatedly and synchronously activated, the strength of their synaptic connection will persistently increase. This is the physical basis of memory and learning.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The neural principle of deliberate practice. Due to the LTP mechanism, there is no shortcut to learning; it must rely on "repetition" and "associative activation" to physically strengthen neural pathways. Forcing new knowledge (A) to be considered together with existing old knowledge (B) is the fastest way to establish connections.
Anchor fast decisions
After high-frequency stimulation of the postsynaptic neuron, the efficiency of synaptic transmission between neurons is persistently enhanced, which is considered one of the cellular mechanisms of learning and memory.
