Shared Space
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Remove all traffic signs, traffic lights, and curbs to allow mixed traffic of people and vehicles. Counterintuitively, this 'dangerous' design actually improves safety. Because of the lack of protective rules, drivers and pedestrians are forced to pass through eye contact and negotiation, becoming more cautious.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Increase responsibility through deregulation. Excessive safety facilities (fences, rules) lead to 'risk compensation' (since there is a fence, I don't need to watch the road). Removing external mandatory rules can awaken people's inner attention and mutual aid instinct.
Anchor fast decisions
Shared Space urban design: cancel traditional right-of-way separation (signals, markings, curbs), allow pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles to mix, relying on eye contact and low-speed self-organization, which actually improves safety and sense of place.
