Hypercycle
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A group of self-replicating units (A produces B, B produces C, C produces A...) connected into a closed catalytic cycle. This structure enables the system to integrate information, co-evolve, and resist invasion by parasitic systems. It is a key structure for life to emerge from molecular chaos.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Moat of an ecosystem. When building a business or knowledge ecosystem, a one-way chain is fragile. Only when you can establish a 'mutually causal, mutually reinforcing' hypercycle within the system (e.g., user content -> attracts users -> more content) does the system gain the resilience of life.
Anchor fast decisions
The hypercycle, proposed by Eigen and Schuster, is a cyclic network of catalytic reactions: each component catalyzes the next, the whole self-replicates and competes, used to explain how information stably accumulates and evolves in prebiotic molecules.
