Proof of Work, PoW

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Introduced as a spam deterrent by Cynthia Dwork and Moni Naor and adapted for blockchain consensus in Bitcoin, proof of work requires a participant to solve a computationally expensive puzzle whose solution is cheap to verify. The cost makes large-scale abuse, such as sending bulk email or rewriting a chain of blocks, economically unattractive. Difficulty adjusts so that blocks are produced at a steady rate. Key qualification: security depends on the cost of acquiring a majority of computational power, and concentration of that power undermines the guarantee.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Raise the cost: impose an expensive, verifiable barrier to filter out cheap noise and casual abuse. - Verify cheaply: design the check so that confirming a result costs far less than producing it. - Read commitment: treat willingness to pay the cost as evidence of serious intent.
Anchor fast decisions
If abusing a system requires spending resources proportional to the harm you could cause, and honest participation is cheaper than attacking, rational actors prefer honest behavior. Verification is cheap, so other participants can confirm the work without repeating it. Raising the cost of entry therefore converts an open system into one where influence is proportional to demonstrated commitment.
