CORE DEFINITION

The process by which the mainstream order (or capitalism) neutralizes the threat of rebellious ideas by commodifying them. For example, rock music, originally anti-establishment, became cool culture sold in shopping malls; Che Guevara became a pop symbol printed on T-shirts.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Understanding the commercialization of heterodoxy. Any radical innovation or rebellion will eventually be absorbed by the system and become part of it. This explains why "counterculture" always ends up becoming a business.

Recuperation (co-optation / recuperation, called récupération by the Situationist International) refers to the dominant system defusing the subversive potential of marginal, oppositional symbols, styles, or demands by transforming them into consumable commodities or controllable subcultures. Mechanisms include: commodification (rebellion becomes trendy), symbol extraction (only the appearance is kept, stripped of political connotations), and institutional accommodation (incorporating protest into manageable channels). It satisfies people's need for "individuality/rebellion" without threatening the structure, thereby achieving soft assimilation.
